Sciennes

About Sciennes

Sciennes, pronounced 'sheenz', is a charming district located approximately 2 kilometres south of Edinburgh's city centre, just on the edge of the picturesque Meadows, one of Edinburgh’s most enjoyed parks. This mainly residential area is known for its historic significance and modern amenities.

Location and Boundaries

Sciennes is situated immediately south of The Meadows and is bounded by Melville Drive to the north, Argyle Place to the west, Sciennes Road to the south, and Causewayside to the east. It also extends southeast to include Sciennes Hill Place and Sciennes Gardens. The district shares a community council with Marchmont and is part of the Marchmont, Meadows and Bruntsfield Conservation Area.

Historical Significance

The area's history dates back to the early 16th century with the establishment of the Dominican Convent of St Catherine of Scienna, founded by Lady Janet Seton in 1518. This convent, the only Dominican nunnery in Scotland, was destroyed during the Reformation in 1567. A plaque at St Catherine's Place marks the site of the former convent.

Architecture and Housing

Sciennes is characterized by terraces of four-storey Victorian tenements, which replaced the earlier mansions and large villas by the end of the 19th century. Notable buildings include Sciennes Hill House, which hosted a literary dinner with Robert Burns and Walter Scott, and the Old Jewish Burial Ground, the first Jewish cemetery in Scotland.

Modern Amenities

Today, Sciennes is a popular area for students due to its proximity to the University of Edinburgh. It offers a peaceful yet thriving environment with a range of pubs, restaurants, antique shops, and a multi-purpose arts and cultural venue. The University of Edinburgh's student accommodation in Sciennes provides convenient living for students, with a large common room and easy access to George Square and the shuttle bus to King’s Buildings.
