Belmont
About Belmont
Belmont, nestled in the London Borough of Sutton, is a charming village in South London, England. Located off the A217 road, it is conveniently situated near Banstead Downs in Surrey, approximately 10.8 miles south-southwest of Charing Cross.
History of Belmont
The village of Belmont did not exist until the late 19th century. The pivotal moment in its development was the opening of Belmont railway station in May 1865, initially named 'California Station' after the nearby California Arms public house. The station was later renamed 'Belmont' in 1875, and this name became associated with the emerging village. The original California Arms pub, built around 1858, was severely damaged during World War II and was rebuilt in 1955. Interestingly, the pub reverted to its original name, 'The California,' in 2014.
Development and Landmarks
The growth of Belmont was significantly influenced by the presence of Banstead Asylum, which, although located in the parish of Banstead, was closer to Belmont. This asylum site is now occupied by HM Prison High Down. Another notable institution was Belmont Hospital, a psychiatric hospital that operated after World War II and was eventually demolished in the 1980s to make way for the 'Belmont Heights' housing development.
Nature and Conservation
Belmont is surrounded by natural beauty, with Banstead Downs, a large Site of Special Scientific Interest, extending just south of the village. This area is known for its chalk grassland and diverse flora, including greater knapweed, lady's bedstraw, and field scabious. Additionally, Belmont Pastures and Cuddington Meadows are designated Sites of Borough Importance for Nature Conservation, offering scenic walks and unique wildlife.
economy and Local Amenities
The heart of Belmont's commercial activity is Station Road, which hosts a variety of independent shops and restaurants. This vibrant High Street stretches from Belmont Station to St John's Church, providing a welcoming atmosphere for both locals and visitors. The village is also close to the larger economic centre of Sutton, located just a mile to the north.
Transport
Belmont is well-connected via its railway station, which is part of the Sutton to Epsom Downs branchline and the London Victoria to Epsom Downs line. The station is operated by Southern rail and falls within London Travelcard Zone 5, making it an accessible and convenient location for commuters and travelers alike. TfL buses also serve the area, enhancing the village's connectivity.
Notable Residents
Belmont has been home to several notable figures, including David Bellamy, the renowned botanist and academic; James Hunt, the World Formula One motor-racing champion; and Lord Judd, the former director of Oxfam and MP for Portsmouth constituencies. The village's cultural and intellectual heritage is further enriched by its association with musicians like Don Lusher and Lionel Tertis, and journalists such as Lord Ritchie-Calder.
